Project Title: Canada Warbler (Cardellina canadensis) Conservation Awareness through Citizen
Science in the Cloud Forest of Filandia, Colombia
Financed by the Baillie Fund, Canada
Start Date: August, 2021 Completion Date: April, 2022
Taller 1.
Febrero 5-2021
The three specific objectives are as follows:
1. Establish a local citizen science volunteers group that generates long-term knowledge on the
Canada Warbler. We will teach 20 local volunteers basic bird-watching skills, specifically youth
leaders from the region, so volunteers can learn to identify and monitor birds, in particular the Canada Warbler in local forests and farms. This includes teaching volunteers how to use the online platform ebird to document sightings and relevant ecological information in the international database, generating a long-term data gathering strategy.
2. Document and analyse data on population and habitat of the Canada Warbler. An expert
ornithologist will accompany the citizen science group to teach them bird-watching skills and enrich the data gathered by volunteers by validating data and complementing it with meteorological data that
will be also measured. We hope to be able to identify ecological relationships between climate andabundance of Canada warblers in the region, and recommend conservation strategies.
3. Promote awareness and conservation engagement amongst other local actors, including the
local government and peasant communities of the municipality of Filandia, Quindio, as to the
importance of protecting habitat for migrating birds in their farms. This educational program will be led by the citizens science group as a way of empowering volunteers as citizen scientists, educators and birdwatchers.
